Activists holding $14.00If you're struggling and have to choose every month between paying rent and buying food, yesterday's provincewide Day of Action was geared to make your life better.

Communities across Ontario made Aug. 14 a collective Day of Action, calling for a $14 minimum wage, with a local rally being kicked off in Richmond Hill at 2 p.m. at the Tim Hortons at 11005 Yonge St.

Raising Ontario's minimum wage makes good economic sense
Cook flipping burgersThe minimum wage has been frozen since 2010, yet unemployment, especially youth unemployment, remains stubbornly high - contradicting the theory that corporations will invest and that jobs will only increase when wages are lower.

The Canadian Labour Congress has reported that corporations are sitting atop nearly $500 billion in unused funds thanks to generous tax cuts (a.k.a. corporate subsidies), instead of investing in job creation.

The End Game of Charity
Street sceneCharity is failing as a sector largely because it is measured by its ability to become obsolete. I am not referring to any charity or nonprofit in particular, or to charity as the gifting of money/goods/services, but to the mainstream vision of charity as it relates to addressing significant disadvantages within a population.

The end game of these charities should be to work towards a point where the populations they serve are no longer disadvantaged. So why is it that so few, if any, charities close down because they "succeeded"?

Social inequality root of food bank issues: experts; Canadian governments not ensuring basic human rights met say critics
Shopping carts in a food bankThe increasing use of food banks is just a symptom of a growing social inequality within Canadian society, according to two academic experts on social issues.

"There is a lot of evidence that things are getting worse for people who are not well off," said Dr. Fran Klodawsky, professor at Carleton University, whose expertise is in social policies. "There is a growing polarization of income. In many, many facets of life, those that have are getting more and those that don't have seem to have a harder time being able to access services, benefits, all sorts of things."
