Turning the Tide on Poverty: From Charity to Advocacy

38% of food distributed is perishableThis infographic by Food Banks Canada was part of the HungerCount report. The report states that while there was a drop of approximately 40,000 food bank users between 2012 - 2013, there were 833,000 food bank users in Canada. This is 23% more than the number of people who accessed food banks prior to the 2008 recession.

A better way
The directors of the London Food Bank surprised the city this week by announcing they want to dismantle half the operations of the 27-year-old agency three years from now. Glen Pearson and Jane Roy want something to replace an outdated institution that was supposed to be temporary and isn't addressing the root causes of hunger and poverty.

Experts sound warning on looming food crisis in the North
Image of a remote communityAboriginal communities in Northern Canada are facing an impending health crisis due to food insecurity, according to a new report from a panel of Canadian experts.

The report says these Aboriginal households have double the rate of food insecurity compared to the average Canadian household, at 27 per cent compared to 14 per cent.
