Owen Sound Sun Times - Cheryl Clock - Opinion
Why do we vilify the poor?
Face of a child living in povertyIf you are on social assistance and choose to be poor in Ontario (because, of course, we all know poverty is a lifestyle choice), you will need to follow certain rules.

If you abide by these simple rules, you will be allowed to remain poor. On assistance. Forever.

Oh, and they're not my rules. These have been imposed on you, by your peers.

In no particular order:

Rule 1. Say goodbye to Tim Horton's ...

We are stuck on band-aid plans cause beyond them we can't see
The world is covered in band-aids.

We open more food banks in attempts to vanquish hunger. We target leaders of any given terrorist group to combat global terrorism. We elect different political parties in attempts to vanquish unemployment and increase democratic accountability. We ban facebook and phones in schools to reduce cyber bullying. Health Providers Against Poverty - Primary Care Tools on Poverty
Letter to Premier Wynne on Poverty Reduction
Individuals at the lower end of the income spectrum are at greater risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and mental health illness. In the health system, individuals living in poverty are treated differently than those who are wealthy, with less access to specialist health services and lower uptake of many preventive measures. Illness in turn can deepen poverty, particularly through barriers to employment. To ensure a healthy population, we need to not simply treat illness but tackle the upstream causes of illness including poverty.

Canada Without Poverty - Leilani Farha - Executive Director
Beyond Partisanship, the Wynne-ing way?
Ripples on the waterThese are tough times in Ontario ... a province in crisis: 40% of those who suffer food insecurity in Canada live in Ontario; ... 10% of those using food banks are gainfully employed; immigrants, newcomers and other vulnerable groups are over-represented in precarious employment, often working multiple part-time jobs and still not earning enough to make ends meet; social assistance recipients are living at least 40% below any accepted poverty line, and thousands of people, including many youth, are homeless, living in shelters, on the streets or doubled up with friends, and family.
