The London Free Press - Norman DeBono
London anti-poverty activists asking business to find alternatives to food banks
Norman DeBonoLondon's anti-poverty advocates envision a future when there isn't a food bank and those in need get their food from grocery stores.

To help make that vision a reality, they're calling on business expertise for help, Jane Roy, co-executive director of the London Food Bank, said Thursday.

"Is there a creative way for folks who need cheaper food to get it where we all get it? We need people who think outside the box."

Brooks Bulletin online - Local news for Brooks, AB
United Way to stop funding dairy program at Brooks Food Bank
Effective Jan. 1, 2015 the United Way will no longer fund the Brooks Food Bank Foundation's dairy program.

"They figure we're maintaining the problem (of food insecurity), that we're not coming up with a solution," said food bank manager Gwen Cameron.

The solution, the United Way explains, is to offer a program such as a bagged lunch or soup kitchen program which the United Way would likely fund.

"This program is viewed as one that only manages or maintains the issue of food insecurity and has no means to create a solution for these individuals," states Darren Lole, president of Southeastern Alberta United Way.

Giving Thanks at the Newmarket Food Pantry

Chew on this! Canada's tax cuts take priority over ending poverty
Joe GunnMy daughter just can't believe the poverty she has seen this past week...

She had just left for a six-month stint, along with 17 other young adults from Nicaragua and Canada, to live with host families, learn each other's customs and work with social agencies.

But my daughter wasn't on the line from somewhere in the Global South. She was calling from Hamilton, Ont.
