Canada's food banks are booming, to our shame |
It's hard to believe hunger has a place in Canada. This is a country that ranks 11th out of 186 countries on the UN Human Development Index, which measures standards of living.
That's why the annual HungerCount report, which found that a record number of Canadians are using food banks, is so disturbing.
And it seems it's only getting worse: The study from Food Banks Canada found that 841,000 people visited a food bank during March of this year, a 1-per-cent increase from the previous year. And that figure is up 25 per cent from 2008 when the most recent economic downturn hit.

UNICEF gives Canada a passing grade, child poverty actually fell during the recession ... or did it? |
Let's see if we can make sense of this.
UNICEF has just given Canada a passing grade, mind you barely a pass, when it comes to the fight against child poverty. In a report released today it claims that 21% of Canadian children live in poverty, nothing to brag about, but at least this is lower than the 23% who were poor just before the recession started in 2008.

Child poverty a better target for family relief |
Let's imagine you're a prime minister with $4.6 billion to spend. Do you:
• Eliminate child poverty? Or,
• Give upper middle-class parents a 1 per cent increase in income?
Interesting choice. On the one hand, you have this longstanding pledge from the government of Canada - made way back in 1989 - to eliminate child poverty. On the other hand, you have a more recent pledge made by your party to deliver an income-tax cut to couples with children who have one high-earning spouse. Which promise do you choose to fulfill?

Income splitting would not benefit low-income single parents, minister says |
Income splitting would not benefit single parents because the majority are considered low income, says the Minister of State for Social Development, Candice Bergen.
According to 2011 tax data from Finance Canada, about 55 per cent of single parents do not pay income taxes, based on tax liabilities before refundable credits. After taking into account refundable credits, the proportion of non-taxpaying single parents increases to about 75 per cent.

The dilemma between healthy eating and staying above the poverty line |
More than 1.7 million households, or four million Canadians, are affected by some level of "food insecurity," which means they can't, or they constantly worry about being able to, properly feed their families because they lack the means. That's almost half a million more than five years earlier, according to the latest Statistics Canada data. |

"For everybody to be a productive community member, you have to have a food security. When you are hungry, you can't think, you can't help others because you can't help yourself at that point and as a community, I think we all need to come together and make sure everybody has food security."
